The Bishop’s Garden

“What will you do with all of those wishes?”

Said the boy

Eyes as brown as  the pennies

Falling to the water’s floor.

He took the fourth coin.

Flung it into the well.

It landed

Amidst unrequited love

And disappointment.

“And, why do you wish?”

He said, rounding the corner

Near the prodigal son,

Marble statue and pure white

Hydrangea.

To quiet the voices

We wish.

To soothe the heartache

We wish.

To love those

Who do not hear, we wish.

“That’s three”

He said.

Eyes closed. I said

“That’s three”
